  1. Thanks for this. You answered one of my questions here about addressing current symptoms (Cognitive Therapy) vs Root Causes approach (Telling their story & working through past issues).

    Would CBT be inappropriate for someone with poor insight, or who is reticent to do homework, behavior experiments, is hyper sensitive to criticism, or is extremely emotionally driven as opposed to rational?

    So it seems the therapist's own personality type also should be a good match to their client's, since they are working as a team. Do therapists take this into consideration when they decide to take on a client?

  2. The idea of childhood experiences leading to positive and negative core beliefs is something that I agree with. I believe that our childhood has a lot of influence over our though process. I tend to agree lean towards cognitive therapy when thinking about what therapy I will integrate into my own counseling style.

  3. I think that self talk is a really good aspect of this therapy. Since most of this therapy targets thoughts, it’s a good skill to have a client practice when they are not in sessions.

  4. Being aware of yourself is a crucial element in development. I do not think people realize how much childhood experiences shape their views in adulthood. This modality is very applicable in many settings in my opinion.

  5. I really enjoy this therapy. It makes a lot of sense when talking about certain behaviors, thoughts and feelings that develop for various reasons such as, childhood experiences, environment, etc.

    One technique that I really like with this therapy is identifying cognitive distortions which helps clients recognize where their thinking is inaccurate and helps promote positive and rational thoughts.

  6. I believe that the thought record is beneficial in helping a client notice and identify the different thoughts that they may have and it also leaves room to have a thoughtful conversation regarding those thoughts.

  7. I agree that people should be aware of their schema, or their filters of how they view the world, and study the self by learning their own beliefs and automatic thoughts. And I really like the idea of self-talk, as I use it as an approach for myself when I experience anxiety in certain situations. However, I find it challenging to get motivated to actively practice on using these techniques in real life.

With CBT, pursuing exploration of maladaptive thoughts, schemas, and understanding their correlation to how one views themselves, it seems a more straightforward theory, as opposed to some of the other theories. However, when adding the dysfunctional component to these distorted thoughts, it is easy to see how we are all susceptible to believing and accepting the negative to be true. The real work lies in the techniques to overcome those negative thought patterns and recreate how one speaks to oneself in a healthy and positive manner.

  9. I think that cognitive therapy is very interesting in many ways. I also believe that childhood experiences lead to the development of positive or negative core beliefs and that there is a relationship between behaviors, feelings, and thoughts. I am most interested in studying a client's cognitive distortions and maladaptive schemas. I feel that helping clients develop self-talk skills will be very powerful in motivating them to gradually alter distorted beliefs. An example could be when self-talk helps a client go through with a task, even if he believes it won't be successful. Over time, the client could develop new ways of thinking.

  10. I love cognitive Therapy. Its one of those therapies that makes sense to me. I agree with the idea that child hood experiences can affect a person in present day. Automatic thoughts is one thing I would like to further look into.

  11. I find the technique of decatastrophizing interesting. It takes away the fear of an unknown outcome and puts thing in perspective. This may allow the client to more readily take action.

  12. I think this theory makes the most sense to me. After using this theory in my theory reflection paper, I realized a lot about myself and childhood; as well as why I think the way I do today. Therefore, I understand why this theory is utilized more than others.

  13. I tend to agree with everyone else's comments. I like cognitive therapy because it is so applicable to interactions with so many different types of clients. I especially like the recognition of automatic thoughts, dysfunctional thoughts, and cognitive distortions. Sometimes, reframing a client's perspective is all it takes for a better outlook and functioning.

  14. ok.. I agree with Brittany. I think my found my niche! This style of therapy is very contemporary and fits almost every situation with the exception of the mentally ill.

  15. I love this style of therapy! While reading and looking at the video, I was realizing that this may be my style. I love the techniques that are used. The behavioral experiment is great because I believe that the mindset has an effect on everything else; if a person changes their thoughts and or actions than that can have an impact on their feelings. I also like the cognitive rehearsal technique where the client imagines a situation that could potentially cause them stress and works through it in a safe environment.

  16. It is my personal belief that CBT is a very effective type of therapy for clients who want to identify their negative thoughts in order to change/alter their maladaptive behaviors. I think therefore I am is basically what I say to myself almost everyday, so not only I will be aware of my thoughts towards others but most importantly I will be aware of the thoughts I have towards myself. It is very important to have positive self-talk especially everyday so that you reiterate reasons for why you like yourself, what you're good at, etc. I have always said it's you that has to live in your body, so you should want to make the best of it as you can.
